I’m thrilled to offer this print in honor of Earth Month, during a particular time when I think this message (my then 5 year old daughter’s words) is particularly resonant.

When I made the painting in 2023, I wrote the accompanying text:
”This painting was created from a page in a book made by my daughter, then five years old. She has come with us to protests over the years and inspired by the format of call and response, she has thought a lot about the messages that she wants to send out into the world. Sometimes, she writes these messages in notes and in hand-made books that she gives to me. Some of her messages are too beautiful to not reflect back to her, too rich to not paint so that I may reflect on the pride and sadness they bring to me.”

Now, a few years later, when circumstances seem, perhaps, even more uncertain, these words ring with certainty. The world is what we will make of it. For better or for worse. We are all we’ve got (which includes you and me and the river birch and the groundhog and the baby lightning bugs and the bottlebrush buckeye and the barking dog and the lady at Kroger and the neighbor with the flag you don’t like and your favorite librarian and your old friends from high school and so on)... And if we don’t keep the wellness of our planet in mind, then we aren’t long for this world. The end.

May this print be motivational for you to take action and agency in the world that you want to help make.
